WHILE ESSEX COUNTY CRICKET CLUB continues to chase honours in both the Specsavers County Championship and T20 Vitality Blast competitions, the clubs over 50’s have landed a notable piece of silverware of their own.

Having already seen off Northamptonshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire, Essex faced one last hurdle – an eagerly anticipated ECB 50+ County Championship final with their Yorkshire counterparts at Kibworth – both bidding to conclude their campaign in style.

Nevertheless, Essex was handed a tough task. Babar Butt’s superb unbeaten 102 went some way towards Yorkshire posting a sizable 250/2 – Nick Gaywood offering able support with a solid 68.

But Essex was not to be denied a dramatic victory. Neil Burns led the way with 107 while Giles Ecclestone (64) was also amongst the runs as the target was chased down with just three deliveries to spare.

Mohammed Shahnawas did hi utmost to derail the Essex charge – the Yorks bowler taking 3/50. However, his efforts were in vain. Neil Braithwaite and Carlos Remy helped Essex over the line, sparking ecstatic celebrations amongst players and supporters alike.
