Ray Crawford: Colchester’s camaraderie is clear to see

Crawley Town v Colchester United – Preview:

RAY CRAWFORD hailed what he believes is a ‘happy’ Colchester United side and has backed them to continue their quest for promotion from Sky Bet League Two with a victory at Crawley Town on Saturday.

The U’s recovered for a half-time deficit to sweep aside bottom of the table Stevenage last time out – a result which has lifted the North Essex side within a [point of the play-off places. And Crawford believes the spirit in the camp is the main reason behind what has so far been a decent campaign for John McGreal’s men.

“There’s a lot to be said for playing football with your mates – it’s an ‘all for one and one for all’ spirit,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“Colchester is one of the form teams at the moment. The cup run has helped with that and Saturday will be important as we will want to win the three points as well as plant a seed of doubt in Crawley’s mind ahead of the fourth round match there later this month.

“But we seem to have discovered some resilience. That is vital in League Two because most of the teams are up for a scrap. You have to dig deep and do the dirty jobs. Colchester is doing that efficiently at the moment and that’s a hugely encouraging sign.”

Crawford continued: “Colchester are unbeaten in four league matches while Crawley hasn’t won in four. However, there are only three points between them in the table – it can all turn on its head very quickly if you don’t keep your wits about you.

“Two of the goals against Stevenage came late in the game. Colchester had to work hard and be patient against a side fighting for their life. I expect Crawley to play with a little more desire, particularly being the home team. But Colchester has shown what they are made of and can put pressure on those teams above them with a win, which is what I expect them to do.”
